The Advantage of Vertical Axis Wind Turbine

Posted by Atmana

Have you heard about vertical axis wind turbine? If you haven’t heard such equipment you need to understand wind turbine first. Basically, wind turbine is a part of green energy concept which has been long used to meet the daily energy needs. It is true that today the role of fossil energy is still dominant, and yet the wind turbine seems not to be able to replace the role of some kind of oil-based energy. However, a special place has been prepared for the wind turbine to exist. In general, there are many types of wind turbine and vertical axis is one of them.

What is Vertical Axis Wind Turbine?

Vertical axis wind turbine

Vertical axis means that the main rotor of turbine is set in vertical-position to the wind. The main components placed at the base of the wind turbine and this means that the gearbox and generator to be placed close to the ground. In this way a wide range of essential tools can be repaired and maintained easily. However, the vertical axis wind turbine doesn’t have to be pointed directly to the wind and it means no orientation and wind-sensing mechanisms would be needed.

Vertical axis wind turbine offers a number of advantages, including:

The gearbox is much less fatigue and replacement is simpler and requires less cost for maintenance and repair. No complex mechanism means that such wind turbine doesn’t need crane or any other large equipment.

It is not necessary to track the wind. That means such wind turbine is free of complex mechanism.

Screw pile foundation can be used to build vertical axis wind turbine. Therefore there will be a huge reduction in road transport of concrete and the carbon cost during installation. Shortly speaking, the turbine can be recycled once their life expired.

Such wind turbine is easy to manufacture and they don’t have complex structure and shape.

Such turbine can be grouped together with horizontal-axis wind turbine in wind farms. This means that the rate of efficiency (in terms of power output) will be improved drastically.

Vertical-axis wind turbine has more output power (about ten times) than a typically horizontal-axis wind turbine.

If you have two options between vertical-axis and horizontal axis wind turbine then it is clear than the first one would be the most reliable option compared to the latter one. Vertical axis wind turbine, therefore, has to be the first choice, your top of the list.
