Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine vs. Vertical Axis Wind Turbine: Which one is Better?

Posted by Atmana

There are two common of wind turbines, horizontal axis wind turbine and vertical axis wind turbine. There are some pros and cons about which one is better than the other one, which makes some people don’t have any idea what type to go with. If you are planning to buy a wind turbine, then you need to know the differences between the two of them to decide what type that best suits your needs.

Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine Pros and Cons

Horizontal axis wind turbine

One of the good things about horizontal wind turbine is its easiness in assembling. Because it has a thin and long structure that is quite lightweight, handling the turbine is much easier. You also don’t have to cost a lot of money for the shipping because it is not so weight and bulky. Horizontal axis wind turbines are more effective in adjusting the different wind directions. With its good adjusting ability, horizontal wind turbine can provide a more efficient output. So if your living area has wind directions that tend to change, you can go with the horizontal type. This is also easy to maintain and you can use it for many years to come without even bothering for tuning up. However, most models of horizontal wind turbines have structures that can make them touch the ground when spinning. This will make damage your land slowly. Due to the many good things of the horizontal type, this is more expensive compared to the vertical wind turbine.

Vertical Axis Wind Turbine Pros and Cons

Vertical wind turbines require heavier and bigger materials for the assembling that lead to expensive shipping cost. So, although the size of the wind turbine is small it doesn’t give you benefits in terms of shipping cost. When it comes to the function, it doesn’t work effectively sometimes because it cannot deal with the changes of the wind directions. So it can only deal with the same wind direction. Due to the inability in adjusting to different directions of wind, it doesn’t provide a satisfying efficiency and output. Unlike horizontal wind turbines, this will not damage your land, but it can kill the ecosystems of the aerial instead. The big benefits of this turbine are its easy maintenance and affordable price.

Those are some pros and cons about horizontal axis wind turbine and vertical axis wind turbine that you need to know. Consider the good and bad sides to decide which one suit you more.
